Blog - Surfcasting in the Ebro Delta
The Ebro Delta is internationally considered one of the best fishing destinations in the Mediterranean.
Its calm, nutrient-rich waters are home to a wide variety of native species such as sea bass, carp, pompano and especially sea bass. If you enjoy surfcasting and fishing in general, here you will have the opportunity to fish on your own or find experienced local fishermen who can guide you.
What is the surfcasting technique?
The surfcasting technique, which literally means “casting into the waves”, is one of the most widely practised fishing methods, especially among beginners or people who want to get started in the world of fishing.
It is based on shore fishing from sandy beaches. It involves long-distance casting, requiring powerful throws. The ideal fishing rod is around 4 to 4.5 metres long.
This type of fishing is generally practised from beaches, although it can also be done from breakwaters or rocks.
Some practical tips for surfcasting in the Delta
1. When is the best time to fish?
Without a doubt, between May and November are the most pleasant months for practising surfcasting in the Delta, as this is when most species arrive. However, thanks to the large amount of nutrients carried by the Ebro River to its mouth, there is an abundance of fish all year round.
2. Essential equipment for surfcasting in the Delta
To fish “in the waves”, you need the right equipment. While surfcasting kits are highly appreciated by fishing enthusiasts, others prefer telescopic surfcasting rods from brands such as Shimano, Yuki or Trabucco.
Among the essential surfcasting equipment, there are also lightweight accessories that will be very useful for an unforgettable fishing trip on the beach. In the Alfacs campsite supermarket, you will find everything you need to complete your fishing kit.
3. Patience, the best recommendation for fishing
If you are already experienced, you probably know this already, but if you are just starting with surfcasting, our best advice for success is to be PATIENT! Especially if you want to catch large sea bream or sea bass, because if you pull the rod too early, you may miss the opportunity for a catch.
We also recommend practising your casting at different depths and distances until you gain more precision. It is not as easy as it seems, but practice makes perfect.
