Blog - King prawns, a seafood delicacy since Roman times

If you need Omega-3, king prawns have all you need!!!

Coinciding with the best season for king prawn fishing, from late May to mid-June the Gastronomic Days of the King Prawn are celebrated in Alcanar and Les Cases, in the Terres de l’Ebre. Several restaurants from these towns join together to present menus with king prawns as the star ingredient.

The king prawn species Penaeus kerathurus, found throughout the Mediterranean, is also one of the most common species in the Ebro Delta. They are easily recognised by their black eyes, light dark spots on the shell and firm texture.

Stories from ancient Roman settlements already mentioned this crustacean on dining tables. It is worth remembering that trade on the peninsula has always been prosperous thanks to its strategic location and excellent fishing waters.

This product has long been part of both the traditional cuisine of the Terres de l’Ebre and the meals prepared on fishermen’s boats, and it has now also become a tourist attraction. The most typical recipe in the Terres de l’Ebre is grilled king prawns, cooked on a very hot griddle with coarse salt.

Whether large or small, king prawns are an incomparable source rich in Omega-3, making them one of the star dishes if you need a diet rich in fatty acids. If you need Omega-3, king prawns have all you need!!!
